Trailer hitches are grouped into 5 classes by the gross weight and tongue weight they can support.
Tow Rating
When choosing a trailer hitch do not forget to check the tow rating of your car or truck. Most sedans can only handle class 1 or class 2 hitches.
Class 1 Receiver Hitch
Up to 2,000 lbs. GTW and up to 200 lbs. TW.
1 1/4″ receiver.
Class 2 Receiver Hitch
Up to 3,500 lbs. GTW and up to 350 lbs. TW.
1 1/4″ receiver.
Class 3 Receiver Hitch
A class 3 trailer hitch will hold most small boats and campers. For larger items use a class 5 trailer hitch.
Up to 6,000 lbs. WC, 10,000 lbs. WD and ranging from 600 lbs. to 1,000 lbs. TW. 2″ receiver, Gloss black finish.
Class 4 Receiver Hitch
Up to 8,000 lbs. WC, 12,000 lbs. WD and ranging from 800 lbs. to 1,200 lbs. TW. 2″ receiver, Gloss black finish.
Class 5 Receiver Hitch
Up to 12,000 lbs. WC, 14,000 lbs. WD and up to 1,400 lbs. TW.
2″ receiver, Gloss black finish.
